Everything About Lip Blush Tattoos: Procedure, Before and After Results, and Care

Women usually want their lips to look plump like Angelina Jolie’s and smooth like Scarlett Johansson’s. And while Kylie Jenner, by her own admission, spends 40 minutes a day lining her lips, people may choose a lip blush tattoo to enhance the shape of their lips and provide a more even coloring without the need for temporary makeup.

Lip blushing is a professional cosmetic and aesthetic procedure that uses a device similar to a common tattoo machine to implant color pigment into the lips. But unlike a body tattoo machine, this device only works on the upper layers of the dermis, which perfectly regenerate.

Depending on the aftercare, lifestyle and your medical condition, which, undoubtedly, also needs to be taken into account, lip permanent makeup can be retained from 2 to 5 years. And just as importantly, this procedure is very popular and desirable among women, as it promises natural-looking results without the daily 40-minute Sisyphean effort that Kylie Jenner has condemned herself to.

Is There a Semi-Permanent Lip Blushing?

Some cosmetologists call the procedure permanent makeup, while other estheticians consider it to be semi-permanent makeup. This can be misleading because it feels like they are two different things. In reality, we are simply dealing with the subjective perception of an individual professional.

The first ones acknowledge that any pigment deposited in the skin will remain there unless professionally removed. There is no magic here and the process should not come as a surprise but, over time, the pigment fades and may not be visible to the naked eye though it is still in the lips. The latter, when having seen the pigment fade to such an extent that it becomes invisible, tend to call the procedure semi-permanent.

Does it Hurt?

Getting a body tattoo is more painful because the pigment penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin. However, everyone has a unique pain threshold. Therefore, we will not console you with phrases that, according to statistics, women are more tolerant of pain than men, or that beauty requires sacrifice, so you can endure temporary discomfort.

Let’s just face the fact: on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being terribly painful, most clients rate it no more than 4. To minimize pain or discomfort, a cosmetologist may apply a topical numbing cream or anesthetic, but these products can cause allergies.

Before and After

Despite the simplicity of lip blushing, unlike some types of ultrasound or medical tests that require you to refrain from eating even an apple or drinking water, good estheticians will have a couple of useful recommendations for you before the procedure:

  • Don’t take pills like ibuprofen or aspirin
  • Don’t use supplements like vitamin E or ginkgo.

It is well known that these substances thin the blood: in any other cases they may be useful but not when you are undergoing a lip blush tattoo.

As for the aftercare, you are advised to avoid beef burritos or Chinese noodle with red chili pepper for up to 48 hours after the procedure as your lips are extra sensitive, and spicy is what they want least during this period.

Once the lip tattooing is done, you may experience some mild swelling or redness. Nevertheless, you shouldn’t cover your lips with disposable masks or something else like that, as the best results will be achieved when you let them air dry. We are sure that your family and friends will be understanding and will not make fun of you more than once a day.

Some people may also notice minor bleeding or bruising. We just want to warn suspicious persons: this is not the beginning of the end, everything is going according to plan: if you have bruises, they will usually disappear within a few days.

After a week, your lips will start healing. Be prepared for some scabbing around this time. Make sure you don’t pick on these scabs as it may leave scars and result in an uneven tone.

During the first two weeks after the procedure, it’s necessary to avoid going out in the sun and working out. If you notice your lips to look slightly darker than what you had in mind, you should accept the situation and breathe out: everything is going according to plan again. The true color will show when the lips have fully healed – it means, in about a month.

Any Side Effects?

Sorry, but there are some, as none of color additives for cosmetic use has approval for intradermal injection. Allergic reactions, keloids and granulomas are not such a common occurrence after lip blushing, but we can’t simply ignore them.

Summary

The procedure is suitable for individuals with busy lifestyles and those who lack lip definition or wish to camouflage any darkness. With a lip blush tattoo, you will no longer need to spend time shopping for your perfect shade of lipstick, and your color will stay all day and night – or rather, many days and nights for 5 years. Isn’t it a long term investment?
